The Friends of St Helena was founded in March 1988 with two aims:
To provide information about St Helena, including its history, culture, environment and current affairs and provide practical support to the St Helenian community.
- We host meetings twice a year, including the AGM in June, at a moveable venue, and a meeting in October, normally in London. The meetings have one or more speakers on topics relating to St Helena's history, culture and environment.
- We publish The St Helena Connection, a news magazine twice a year and Wirebird relating to the island's history one a year.
- We also publish social-historical books under our Wirebird imprint which are available at a reduced price to members.
- We support local projects such as the development of a Museum of St Helena and we expect soon to engage in a major funding exercise for the proposed St Helena Cultural Centre in conjunction with the St Helena Heritage Society.
